Mottled

Mt (het form) | MTMT (hom form)
Mottled is a variable marking modifier that affects other markings, adding spots along the edges
Shape & Placement
  • Mottled allows both spotting and holes to be added surrounding the edges of a marking, including a fade-like effect or trailing spots both inwards or outwards (see examples)
  • Can affect 1 marking in the Het. form
  • At minimum, Mottled must be present somewhere on at least 1 marking
  • Designer's choice as to which marking(s) mottled affects; it is not attached to any specific other markings
  • Mottled can add holes to markings that otherwise cannot have holes
  • Spotted markings (such as Freckled, Starred, Dalmatian) may have clusters/overlapping spots when affected by Mottled
  • Mottled areas can extend outside of the normal range of a marking, but only minimally
  • Mottled can be freely applied to keratin to add spots (must be one solid color) in Het. and Hom. form
  • Mottled can only present as small speckling/spotting and not large patches
  • Mottled MUST be visible somewhere- it cannot be entirely hidden under markings
Color & Edge Type
  • Mottled is a modifier and does not have any defined edge types or range limits. Instead, it should change to match whatever marking it is modifying!
  • Mottled must adopt the properties of whichever marking it is affecting (must use the same edge type, follow same color rules, and follow size limits for applicable markings)
Homozygous Form
  • Can affect up to 3 markings

Correct Examples:

Picture

This is an example of Mottled affecting Hom. Siamese and adding holes that fade into the marking.
Picture

This is an example of Mottled affecting Het. Starred and forming clusters of Starred spots
Picture

This is an example of Mottled heavily affecting Het. Masked with both spots and holes.
Picture

This is an example of Mottled affecting Het. Cover and forming spots around the exterior. Mottled is also affecting the keratin to add spots.

Incorrect Examples:

Picture

This example is incorrect because Mottled can't create holes throughout the marking; they must be around edges.
Picture

This example is incorrect because Mottled cannot form spots throughout the marking range; they must be around the edges of the marking, and cannot form long trails away from it.

Correct Import Examples:

Picture
Het. Mottled affecting Piebald, forming stray spots
Picture
Het. Mottled affecting Starred, forming clusters
Picture
Hom. Mottled affecting Piebald, Merle, and Freckled
